About Creative Journal Expressive Arts
"The Creative Journal Method was developed by Dr. Lucia Capacchione, internationally known author of ten (now thirteen) books, including The Creative Journal, The Power of Your Other Hand and the bestselling, Recovery of Your Inner Child. She is a registered Art Therapist and lecturer/workshop leader. A pioneer in the field of creativity and healing, Dr. Capacchione discovered the healing power of writing and drawing with the non-dominant hand. She originated Inner Child Reparenting work and her book on the subject has become a classic in the recovery field." Click here to read more.
Creative Journal Expressive Arts uses a variety of artistic mediums within guided exercises to, among other things, integrate the right and left hemispheres of the brain. Much of the Creative Journal method consists of “non-dominant hand” exercises. That is, using the hand you do not normally write with. It may feel awkward at first but you will soon discover that words and images flow much more freely… your ‘editor’ does not seem to be in charge. Using your non-dominant hand accesses parts of your brain that aren’t typically used in the ways that the guided exercises are prompting it to.
A simple tool that I frequently use is to write down a question with my dominant hand about something that I am not finding a solution for, then answer the question with my non-dominant hand. Although it might sound a bit strange, I am ALWAYS amazed by the insight I receive. Try it for yourself.
As a result of doing Creative Journal work, my creative style has completely changed. I was once tapped into the intuitive wellspring, but over the years my work became so refined that I lost that connection. Creative Journal has helped me tap back into this wellspring on an even deeper and more prolific level. Through journaling about my creations I have come to understand its content and, therefore, myself.
